A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
