At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
