EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
