In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
