In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
