Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
