Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
